The Great Storm of 1703 sweeps away the first Eddystone Lighthouse

The Great Storm of 1703 was one of the most severe storms ever to hit southern Britain. It swept away the first Eddystone Lighthouse, a wooden tower built by Henry Winstanley on rocks off Plymouth. First lit in 1698, it was the world's first open-ocean lighthouse. The storm also blew down about 2,000 chimney stacks in London and 4,000 oak trees in the New Forest.

Pope Urban II calls for the First Crusade

At the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II declared the First Crusade. Its aim was to bring the Holy Land, which had been under Muslim rule since the 7th century, back under Christian rule. The First Crusade lasted from 1096 to 1099. It was the first of a series of religious wars in the Middle Ages known as the Crusades.

Alfred Nobel signs the will that creates the Nobel Prizes

The Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel signed his last will. In it, he left most of his fortune to set up prizes for those who bring 'the greatest benefit to humankind'. The Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901, for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. They are widely seen as the most important awards in their fields.

The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held in New York

The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in New York City. It is put on every Thanksgiving by the department store Macy's, and it has become the world's largest parade. Millions of people watch it each year, on television or in the streets of Manhattan. The three-hour parade ends outside Macy's store in Herald Square.

Penny Ann Early makes history in men's professional basketball

Penny Ann Early became the first woman to play in a major professional men's basketball league in the United States. She played for the Kentucky Colonels in an ABA game against the Los Angeles Stars. Early achieved another first in the 1960s too. She was the first female jockey to be licensed to ride in parimutuel horse races.

A Soviet probe becomes the first human-made object to reach Mars

The Soviet Union's Mars 2 spacecraft released a landing module as it reached Mars. The lander did not work properly and crashed, but it still became the first human-made object to reach the surface of Mars. Mars 2 was part of a series of uncrewed Soviet spacecraft sent to explore Mars between 1960 and 1973.

Rodolfo Neri Vela becomes the first Mexican astronaut

The Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on mission STS-61-B. On board was Rodolfo Neri Vela, who became the first astronaut from Mexico. Between 1981 and 2011, NASA's Space Shuttle programme flew 135 missions. It carried 355 astronauts from 16 different countries.

Helen Clark becomes New Zealand's first elected woman prime minister

The Labour Party defeated the governing National Party in New Zealand's general election. Labour's leader, Helen Clark, became the country's first female prime minister to win office at an election. Labour and National are the two major political parties in New Zealand.

Astronomers detect an atmosphere on a planet beyond our Solar System

Astronomers announced that they had detected sodium in the atmosphere of HD 209458 b, a planet orbiting a distant star. It was the first time the atmosphere of an exoplanet, a planet outside our Solar System, had been measured. Sodium is a soft, silvery-white metal. It is also found in many minerals, including rock salt.
